Who We Are and What We Do

Paving the Road Towards a Better Future

Dr. Matthew Kettman, native of Gilbertville, graduated from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, completed his residency in Waterloo and has been practicing Family Medicine in the Cedar Valley for over 15 years.

Dr. Kettman has always had a passion for helping others in need. He decided to make this passion a reality by starting a school near the village of Bois Rouge, which is difficult to find on a map but isn’t too far from Cap Haitian. The school which was founded in 2017 is called Bel Avenir, which means good fortune or good futures. We currently have 63 students and four teachers. We are providing one meal a day to the students.

Dr. Kettman partnered with Denis Edner, who is local pastor to start the development of the school. Denis also happens to be the school’s administrator. The current status of the school is mostly a shack; recently starting the concrete foundations. Gil Irey has joined the partnership for the school. Gil is the CEO of Cedar Valley Medical Specialist. Dr. Kettman and Gil are planning a trip down there before the end of the 2019 to see the progress.

The estimated cost to build the school to build $25,000. We currently have a monthly budget for paying teachers and feeding students which is $1,250. Our goal is to expand as we are currently teaching elementary.
